If you have a tooth that is too damaged for a filling but does not require a crown, then an inlay or onlay is the preferred treatment procedure by our restorative dentistry team.

What are inlays and onlays?

Also referred to as indirect fillings or partial crowns, inlays and onlays strengthen the remaining tooth structure. Inlays and onlays are sometimes crafted in a dental laboratory or the office during your appointment and typically made of porcelain or composite resin. During your consultation, Dr. Ricardo will determine which type of treatment and which material will be best for you.

What are the differences between an inlay and an onlay?

An inlay is used when the structure that must be replaced is between the cusps (tiny bumps) of a tooth. Onlays are used to restore damage that is more extensive and can cover the entire chewing surface of a tooth—including multiple cusps if needed.

Many inlays can be completed in a single visit. However, onlays usually require two visits: one to prepare the tooth, create an impression for molds and place a temporary restoration, and a second appointment to permanently bond the onlay to the tooth, and to make adjustments to ensure a proper bite.

How do inlays and onlays compare to a crown?

  • They preserve a greater amount of the natural tooth structure than a traditional crown
  • Preparation for an inlay or onlay is less intrusive than a crown
  • They are less expensive than a dental crown
  • The procedure for an inlay or onlay takes less time than a full crown
